Smoking in church? Class set for August 5

GLADSTONE — A free “Meat Smoking 101” class will be offered 1-3 p.m. Saturday, August 5, in the foyer at Grace Church in Gladstone.The course will cover all the basics for starting smoking meat and fish, including equipment selection and recipes, according to Jon Potes, associate pastor of discipleship and leader of the Men’s Ministry, host of the event.Jordan Pardee, pastor of student ministries at Grace, will be one of two speakers. “I’ve been smoking for two years,” said Pardee. “I went through a meticulous process to decide what type of smoker to get, so I’ll be focusing on types and brands of smokers — advantages and disadvantages of each.”Several smokers will be available for participants to inspect.Quinn Barrios will demonstrate specifically how to prepare and smoke fish, based on his 10 years’ experience. Barrios, Pardee, who smokes mostly red meat, and about half a dozen others will also serve samples of fish, chicken, pork butt and brisket smoked the night before. They will also share their recipes and be available to answer questions.The class is free and open to all interested.
